Prototype 1
The main colour
scheme that I have used in this prototype is red and black which is
stereotypical in the genre of horror. I chose his colour scheme as I feel that
audiences in the magazine will immediately recognise the red and black on the
poster and know that it is an advertisement for a horror channel. The colour
reds main connotations are danger and evil, which is very relevant in the
horror genre and by using black as well, it helps to signify the idea of the
unknown and once again danger. I have chosen to only use one main font
throughout the advertisement as it will give an audience an easy way to tell that
the 4 advertisements are for the same channel. By using a bold font and making
it red I believe that this will help to grab the primary audience’s attention
to look into the channel. I have alternated between making the font its usual
size and bold, for example I made the main channel name bold to grab attention
when in the magazine, along with the information on where to find out more
information on the channel and its numbers; then the writing that I have kept
in its normal size is the channels tag line (Watch If You Dare…) which is just
below the channels name. I have done all of this so that the most important
information is in a bold font to easily know what information is important and
then just having the tag line in its normal size as it is directly below the
channel name, so an audience may look directly down from this. For the channel
logo I created it from using rectangles, to create a condensed version of
the channel name is effective as it could possibly be seen more as a picture so
it will be much more recognisable, as it has a “H” to signify the “Horror” in
the channel and then incorporated into the middle part of the “H” is a “T” and
next to it is a small “V” to signify the “TV” in “Horror TV”. By using social
media in the poster and a website for the channel too, helps with audience
interaction, so that the target audience is able to either go on the website to
find out more information on the channel or follow the social media accounts
for updates of shows and movies being shown on the channel. When adding the
channel networks at the very bottom of the poster gives more of an opportunity
for audiences to engage with the channel as they are able to see what number
the channel is on their network, so they are able to actually visit the channel
themselves. For the main image on the advertisement, I was able to take an
unedited picture that I had taken of some dark and tall trees that look quite
mysterious which I wanted to accentuate. To edit this, I imported my image onto
the word document, right clicked on the image to bring up the option of ‘format
image’. After this I went to artistic effects and chose the option of ‘pencil
grayscale’ which makes the image look as if it has been drawn, which in the
advertisement I think creates quite an effective ‘horror’ look.
Prototype 2
Prototype 3
For this
prototype I have continued with the same type of layout that I have used in my
previous advertisements. For example, my channel name is in the biggest and
boldest font to stand out straight away to the primary audience, and then right
beside this I have placed my logo next to it for audience’s recognition of what
would appear in the corner of the channel. Just below my channel title I have
placed some more important information for the audiences to know, especially
the launch date of the channel which is the same date throughout all of my
prototypes. As the background is white in this prototype, I was unable to make
the tag line text for my channel white, so I changed it to black for this
prototype which still helps it to stand out amongst the other information.
Similarly, to my other two prototypes I have put all the information on how to
find or contact the channel at the bottom of the advertisement, this helps to
group this information together so the audience can easily understand where to
find out more information on the channel. By adding all of these ways for
audiences to access more information on the channel It would help to create a
more active audience, as they would be able to visit the website to see the
type of horror entertainment that will be shown on the channel or they would be
able to receive notifications on the launch of the channel through the social
media platforms that are shown on the prototype. For the main image on this
prototype, I have used a normal photo with a person walking away from the
camera along a long path. This once again plays with the idea of mystery in the
horror genre as once edited, the person is unrecognisable, yet it still creates
a creepy and mysterious feeling for the prototype. Overall, I think that this prototype
is effective as the colour scheme (red, white and black) is easily recognised
and linked to the horror genre, along with the font I have used throughout the
prototypes too. It is also informative my including ways to get in touch or how
to find the channel on the television. As I have used similar layout and these
same elements throughout all of my prototypes so far, I believe that the
primary and secondary audiences for my channel will easily know what an
advertisement for my channel looks like, from the repetitive use of the same
font, colour scheme and layout of my prototypes.
Prototype 4
For this final prototype
I have stuck once again, to the same layout as my previous advertisements to
create an easy link towards them all for the intended target audience. The only
small differences and slight changes I have made between this and my other
prototypes is I have changed the colour of the tag line and the website address
to make them stand out amongst the rest of the information in the advertisement
which I have now edited all four prototypes to create a similar effect. This
creates some recognition between the audience and the channel, for example the
tag line ‘WATCH IF YOU DARE…’ is quite memorable so when it is repeated
throughout all of the advertisements the audience will associate that with the
channel and whenever they see it, they will know that it is an advertisement
for my channel. By also making the website address in a different colour that
also keeps with the stereotypes of the genre too, it helps it to catch the eye
of the audience who will potentially be drawn to that straight away and then go
to the website where they would find out more about the channel. These factors
of the advertisement are important in order to create audience interaction, for
example not only having the web address on the font but also social media
platforms for audiences to look into too. This is very effective in creating a
wide age variety for the channel as the younger generations including the
primary target audience (16-25) will be more likely to have a form of social
media than an audience aged (40-55), so this helps to draw many different types
of primary and secondary audiences into watching the channel. By once again
keeping to a continuous and stereotypical colour scheme of the horror genre
(red, white and black) audiences are quickly able to see what type of shows and
movies will be shown on the channel. For the main image I have chosen to use another
person to show the contrast between the prototypes as two are mainly
forest/nature themed and then the other two have mysterious looking people who
never show their faces on the picture and they are also always walking away.
For this main image in the prototype, I have once again, kept the idea of
mystery and unknown and tried to present this in my pictures. As both people
are from different audience groups (Female and Male) it helps the channel to appeal
to a wider range of audience types again as they are represented on the main
image of the advertisement. I have once again used Microsoft word to edit my
images for the cover…
Overall, I think that my adverts have stuck to the stereotypes
of a typical horror advertisement, for example, I have stuck to a consistent
colour scheme which can immediately be linked to the horror genre. For example,
the connotations of each colour used is associated with something in the horror
genre, as red has connotations of blood, danger and anger; and black is
similarly linked to the horror genre being linked to darkness, death and evil,
by adding these two colours to the main colour scheme of the advertisement instantly
tells the audience what type of channel this is without even reading any of the
information on it. These colours are then contrasted by the little pieces of
white that are placed as text or in the main image through the prototypes, this
creates a contrast in the meanings as white is typically seen as a positive
colour, having connotations of safety, protection and goodness. This big
contrast between the main colours of the advertisement gives some relief
amongst all of the bad associations of these colours and the stereotypes that
they are put into. This is useful for an audience’s response to the
advertisement too, because it is being placed in an entertainment magazine, I didn’t
want the advertisement to appear too scary or off-putting to the younger end of
the target audience as they may not want to look further into the advertisement
if the layout is not appealing to them. This also links to in-keeping with the
rules put across by the ASA, as I do not want my advertisements for this
channel to be misleading for the target audience to fully understand, which is
why I have also kept to the same layout across all four of my prototypes.
The reason that I have kept to a repetitive layout
throughout my prototypes is to make them easily recognisable to my target
audience so that when they would see them, they would associate the channel
with that font or the style of photographs that I have used as main images through
my prototypes. By creating these memorable layouts for my channel, I was almost
able to present some sort of narrative in my main images for example, as all of
my photos are set in the same sort of forest setting, which is once again
typical in the horror genre, the two people who appear in two of my prototypes
almost seem as if one is looking for the other, which helps to bring a
narrative into the advertisements of the channel. I also think that this is
effective for my audience too, as they are aged 16-25 years old, they would
probably be more observant than younger audiences so they would look further
into not only the channel itself but the meanings behind the advertisements
themselves.
By putting the multiple ways to find out more about the
channel is able to clearly group together the sections on the advertisement, I
have added multiple ways for the audience to interact with the channel,
appealing to all of the ages represented in the target audience. For example,
the viewers who would be most likely to be on social media would be the age
bracket of 16-20 and that way they are able to see the channel as they scroll
through their different types of social media. Then for the top age bracket in
the target audience there is a website that they are able to visit if they did
not have social media; along with the channel number across the bottom of the
advertisement which I think appeal to the entire target audience.
I think I could further improve my advertisements by using
photoshop to better edit my photographs which I have taken, however due to the
current circumstances (lockdown) I have been unable to access that and other
editing platforms from home. If I were able to access photoshop for this work I
would have developed my channel logo to make it look more appealing to the target
audience along with playing around with different fonts and effects to further
the overall look of the prototype and make it conform more to the stereotype of
the horror genre. This would have also included a wider variety of different
images in my prototypes which I have been unable to show, for example I could
have edited the images to appeal more to the audience along with making the
prototypes fit together well, as a group of 4 advertisements for my horror
channel.
